The Serang Monastery has historically been an isolated sanctuary for Buddhist study and retreat with links to Tibet that traverse the centuries. Traditionally, this sacred site has prohibited all foreign and non-monastic related visitation. Within the last decade, Serang has allowed some visitation, however, too much visitation has become unsustainable and detrimental. Over the years visitation has increased, stressing the Monastery resources and traditional ways of life.

On this day, we arrive at the intersection that leads to either the Nubri or the Tsum Valley. For this trek, we head upwards towards the Nubri Valley. We arrive in Bihi, a village terraced into the mountainside with tremendous views.
A huge ascent, leaving the Nubri Valley floor and passing through a small village terraced into the steep mountainsides. The ascent is steep, but its natural beauty is humbling. The Serang Monastery, with a history of over 500 years, is a unique Buddhist sanctuary nestled in the lap of the Himalaya.
